Partial Agreement Reached In Funding OPP Consent Decree

New Orleans says the sheriff's office can hire managers for a new jail with money the city put up last year to improve conditions at the existing jail.

Thursday's agreement covers about one-quarter of nearly $1.9 million provided last year for extra security and medical workers and to raise base pay for staff at the current jail. The sheriff's office is under federal court order to improve conditions at the current jail.

It says the remaining $950,000 will be used, among other things, to immediately hire new jail guards.

Just over half of the $457,400 agreed on Thursday would hire a variety of managers for the new jail.

There's also $50,000 for a phone translation service, $70,000 for computers, and $100,000 for consultants.

Sheriff Marlin Gusman says the partial agreement “serves as the framework for substantial compliance with the consent agreement.”  He termed it "a significant step."
