Orleans Sheriff Discusses His 2014 Budget Needs With City Council

Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman, at odds with Mayor Landrieu over how much the city should pay for jail reforms, went before the City Council Friday to discuss his budget needs for 2014.

Gusman is asking for $36.1 million to fund his office's operations for next year. The amount the mayor is proposing for the sheriff's office is well below that figure and does not include any money for the pending jail consent decree.

Gusman is scheduled to appear before the Council twice more in budget hearings in the coming days.
