N.O. City Council Hears Report On Illegal T-Shirt Shops In FQ

City Council members questioned administration officials Monday about the proliferation of illegal T-shirt shops in the French Quarter following a presentation on the issue by a French Quarter advocacy group.

Meg Lousteau with the Vieux Carre' Property Owners, Residents and Associates (VCPORA) said she counted 24 unpermitted, illegal T-Shirt shops on Decatur Street alone.

Council member Cynthia Hedge-Morrell expressed concerns that the laws the Council passed regulating T-Shirt shops are not being enforced and that the solution may be stronger laws.

"I don't understand why we can't close their doors until it's decided what is right and what is wrong," Hedge-Morrell said. "Once they understand that if you lie and you open up a T-Shirt shop, we're gonna pull your permit, you only have to do it once or twice."

Councilwoman Kristin Palmer urged the city's safety and permits director to enforce the laws and bring the illegal shops into compliance or shut them down.
