Jefferson Parish Council Chairman Chris Roberts says at this point in time, a majority of the Council supports leasing the parish's two public hospitals to the nonprofit LCMC, Louisiana Children's Medical Center.
Roberts tells 99.5FM that based on conversations he's had with Council members, most, including himself, want a nonprofit to run both East Jefferson General Hospital and West Jefferson Medical Center.
"With more than 70% of the hospitals across this country being run by nonprofits with the intent of reinvesting in our community, I do believe that our public hospitals, which were paid for originally with tax dollars, should continue that model," Roberts said.
"I believe that we have a good option to do that, and I think the majority of the Council is in agreement with that as well," he adds.
Responses from Council members to the parish inspector general's report on the hospital leasing process are still pending. The Council has until November 11 to respond.
Roberts says after the IG receives all the responses that he is due, the Council will set a meeting to consider selecting a company to run the hospitals. Roberts anticipates a meeting within the first two weeks of November.
