In an effort to fight blight more effectively, the Jefferson Parish Council has approved a plan to create a new Department of Property Maintenance Zoning/Quality of Life.
The new department will focus on quality of life issues such as inspecting existing properties to make sure they're in compliance with the parish code. This will allow the Department of Inspection and Code Enforcement to focus its efforts on inspections related to new construction.
Parish Chief Administrative Officer Chris Cox says the new department will also oversee the regulation of taxicabs.
"Now what we're doing is simply splitting those duties so that we have another director who will focus all of his or her energies into the post construction," Cox said.
Cox says the next task is to hire a director for the new department. He says he hopes to have the position filled before the end of the year.
