Ferry Supporters Are Encouraging Employers To Pay Ferry Fare For Employees

The founder of the group Friends of the Ferry says her organization is encouraging employers of service industry workers who take the Algiers-Canal Street ferry to get to their jobs to pay the ferry fare.

Fay Faron says a federal subsidy program exists that will reimburse employers the cost of the fare.

"The employer can buy a Jazzy Pass, which is what our local transit thing is called, which would include the ferry as well, for their employee, and so their employee would have a free commute. But the employer could be reimbursed by the federal government 100%," Faron said.

Faron says her group has begun an effort to get the word out to employers about the federal subsidy.

"We'll be handing out flyers on the ferry that we'll talk about, that will go to the employees themselves, that they can give to their human resources departments, that will tell them about the program and how they can access it," Faron said.

Friends of the Ferry is also planning to get the word out through social media.
