Causeway Bridge Receives Prestigious Designation

Causeway Bridge Receives Prestigious Designation

The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Bridge has been named a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.

The prestigious designation was bestowed upon it by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) in a ceremony Friday at the Mandeville Toll Plaza.

A spokesman for the ASCE says the bridge was honored for innovative construction techniques used in building it.

Design and construction of the Causeway was a major step forward in modern engineering. The use of prestressed  concrete was cutting edge in the 1950s, but the large scale application of component, modular construction for a bridge was unique and truly innovative, the ASCE said.

The Causeway becomes only the fourth structure in the state to receive this designation. The other three are the Huey P. Long Bridge, the McNeill Pump Station in Shreveport and The Eads South Pass Jetties.
