Be Cautious When Using Space Heaters, Fire Marshal Says

With the weather turning colder this week, people will be using their heaters for the first time since last Winter, including portable space heaters.

State Fire Marshal Butch Browning says the use of space heaters is a big concern.

"Space heaters are the leading cause of home fires during the wintertime," Browning said Tuesday in an interview with 99.5FM.

Browning says if you're going to use a space heater, keep this safety tip in mind:

"When you place a space heater, get about a six-foot area around it that's clear of chairs, clothing, curtains, anything that will burn," Browning said.

The fire marshal says never leave a space heater unattended and a space heater should be a last resort as a heating source.
